My grandmother, Natalie Cruz, is included in “We the People” because she represents people who were originally left out of the rights and opportunities promised in the Preamble, including Black women. Throughout history, many Black women faced unfair treatment because of their race and gender. Other groups, such as Hispanic people, women, and members of the LGBTQ+ community, have also experienced discrimination and unequal treatment. To me, “We the People” includes everyone, regardless of their race, gender, background, or identity. Although the original Preamble mainly reflected the interests of land-owning White men, the meaning of “We the People” has grown to include all Americans.
