“We the People” personally means to me that all people have the right to equal rights and representation in the United States, regardless of factors such as race, gender, immigration status, or background. The person I chose, Malcolm X, reflects the meaning of “We the People” because he was an influential African American leader who fought for human rights during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. His goal was to challenge discrimination, end racial segregation, and secure equal rights for Black Americans. This shows how he represents “We the People” because he worked to create a more equal society for everyone. People included in my idea of “We the People” are all individuals, regardless of their background, sexuality, race, gender, or any other characteristic that may lead to discrimination. Two groups that I feel are still sometimes excluded from the idea of “We the People” are members of the LGBTQ+ community and women of color. I also believe that people from lower-income communities can face barriers that make them feel left out or underrepresented.
