“We the People” once represented the beginning of the United States. To me, it now represents what America is today: a nation where people may look different or come from different places, yet are all American.
I was born in South Asia and moved to America as a child. I quickly embraced my American identity, but balancing it with my South Asian identity was difficult. My piece represents this through two sides. The left shows my American identity with Western jewelry and a baseball jersey. The right shows my South Asian identity with traditional bangles and “Chunri Print,” a popular South Asian pattern.
Connecting both sides is a blue beaded necklace. The blue represents the sky, reminding us that regardless of where we come from, the sky is one thing everyone in the world shares.
That is what “We the People” means. The word “people” does not mean one; it means many. America is made up of many people from different cultures, backgrounds, and experiences, coming together as American.
